Expressions - Songs, Lyrics & Poems

Steven R Messick

These lyrics and poems, written over a span of 30 years only represent about half of the ones I've written. Many were lost here and there, but the best ones are within these pages.

I hope they inspire you and make you feel the warmth of love they exude. If anyone is interested in recording some of these lyrics, please feel free to contact me through oldieslover77@aol.com and we'll work it out.

Only a small portion have music set to them. Eleven by my good friend Ron Taber. He plays 11 different instruments, has been in several bands, including a Christian band and now leads music at his home church. I don't have the experience he does but I put music to 4 of these songs myself. The rest would need someone to put music to them.

SAMPLE POEM

POEM

THE FLOWER

Like an archaeologist I consider my chosen site

My feelings are good and my intentions are right

I sift through the sand built up by time

The wall is exposed but too high to climb

My goal is the flower enclosed by the wall

That I can't scale or bring down by force or a wrecking ball

The flowers' desire is to be finally free

But does it believe anything it sees or hears from me

I speak to the flower through the wall hard and cold

Wanting so much to make the flower mine to hold

For to the flower I would be faithful and true

I'm not at fault but I have it to prove

Slowly the bricks and mortar begin to crumble

Leaving me drained, tired and humble

For the flower is a treasure and a great prize

Previously only envisioned now in front of my eyes

The flower is withered from lack of sunlight and water

I can see that it wouldn't have lasted much longer

I gently caress its petals and touch its tender stem

And my tears begin to bring some life to them

Wonderful beauty, truth and harmony are what I see

Faithfulness, devotion and honesty is the offer from me

You and I are on the precipice of our finest hour

For I am your destiny and your love is the flower

SAMPLE LYRIC

I'LL TAKE IT ANYWAY I CAN GET IT

Well life's a beach

And we're all in the sand

If I could only reach

Half of what I demand

Well I wouldn't be so mean

And I could be so nice

Well my friend Gene

Said just take his advice

He said take it easy

I said are you crazy

I'll take it anyway I can get it

Long as I won't live to regret it

I'll take it anyway I can get it

You know what I mean, Gene?

To my friend Luke

I said do you know guy

What burns my boot

I said a flame so high

Well my girl Kate

Said I had some screws loose

Was born that way

I said what's your excuse

(Repeat Chorus)

Does that compute, Luke? Do you contemplate, Kate?

Well life's a beach

And we're all in the sand

If I could only reach

Half of what I demand

Well I could get out of the red

And I could live so nice

Well my friend Fred

Said just put it on ice

(Repeat Chorus)

Did you hear what I said, Fred? You catch my drift, Cliff? Do you scan, Stan? You get the gist, Chris? You follow, Rollo? You dig, you got a shovel?
